Breastfeeding Tips for New Moms

Breastfeeding tips for new moms can help make those first few months a little bit easier. Breastfeeding can be a challenging time, especially if this is your first experience with it. For many new mothers, there are surprises around every corner and things don’t always go according to plan.

There are many benefits to breastfeeding, which is why so many new mothers decide to breastfeed over using formula. For example, breast milk naturally has all of the nutrients that your baby needs to be healthy and strong. Breast milk is also free, whereas formula can get expensive over time, and breastfeeding helps strengthen the connection between mom and baby.

The Breastfeeding Basics

Understanding breastfeeding basics is the first step. Once you have these elements down, you will know how to successfully breastfeed your baby.

1. Pay attention to your baby’s cues

Your baby will let you know when they’re hungry, but not always by crying. Hungry babies may also:

  • Turn or raise their head, as if they are searching for a nipple
  • Open and close their mouth
  • Stuck their tongue out
  • Suck on their clothing or toys

You will quickly learn your baby’s telltale signs of needing to feed. As time goes on, your quick response will help strengthen your relationship.

2. Let your baby nurse as often as they need

Nursing isn’t like mealtime for older kids and adults. There doesn’t have to be any specific structure to the frequency and duration of each nursing session. Your baby will let you know when they are hungry and when they are full. They know what they need and it’s your job to give it to them, whenever they need it.

3. Find a comfortable position

Feeding sessions can last for up to an hour sometimes, depending on how fast or slow your baby tends to eat. It’s recommended to have a special chair at home and some supportive pillows that will take some of the strain off your body. Laying down on your side next to your baby can be one of the most comfortable breastfeeding positions.

4. Take care of your body

The first few months of motherhood can be pretty tough on your body. From recovering from labor and delivery to tender nipples after breastfeeding, your body is going through a lot of new experiences.

  • Use a gentle cleanser on your nipples in the shower. Wash with a very soft cloth or your hands – don’t scrub!
  • Pat your breasts dry after each feeding.
  • Let your breasts get some fresh air when you can. Clothing can be irritating.
  • Apply healing serums and balms to your nipples in between feedings.

5. Avoid clogged milk ducts

Clogged milk ducts can occur if you produce more milk than your baby drinks. This is completely normal for first time moms during the first few weeks after birth. Clogged ducts not only make it difficult for your baby to eat, but they can be extremely painful for you.

The best way to avoid clogged milk ducts is to feed your baby as often as you can. However, if you notice that you produce more milk than your baby eats, you may have to start pumping daily.

In the event that you have a clogged duct, the best way to remedy it is to gently massage the areola between your fingers. It might be easiest to do this in the shower – the warm water will help soften the milk.

6. Eat a balanced diet

It’s recommended to eat an extra 500 calories per day while breastfeeding. In addition, you’ll want to consume food that contains plenty of calcium, including meat and dairy products, broccoli, tofu, and kale.
